If you are playing competitive or recreational tennis in the Fox Valley area, you should become familiar with the Northern Illinois Tennis Association (NITA). It is the local district of the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Midwest Section with the mission "To Promote, Develop and Service the Game of Tennis". A rather large district, NITA consists of 25 counties in the northern third of Illinois; excluding DuPage, Cook and Lake Counties (which make up the Chicago District, CDTA).
A visit to their website will fill you in on events and opportunities for tennis players of all ages and capabilities. You’ll find upcoming recreational events, tournaments to enter, results, rules, entrance information and much more.
One of the most popular programs offered is USTA Jr. Team Tennis, a co-ed team program for boys and girls age 6 to 18. The focus is on the fun of playing with friends, making new friends, and being part of a co-ed team playing singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Teams play in their local leagues then compete in a District playoff (this year to be held at the Lincolnway High School courts in Frankfort). Winning teams from the district advance to Sectionals in Indianapolis, and even Nationals for a few lucky teams from the Midwest. Throughout it all, team comraderie and fun is the name of the game!
Northern Illinois Tennis Association also works with many local groups, including several offering adaptive tennis. A national program that several of the special recreation associations in Northern Illinois work through is the Blaze Sports Program, which is available through NITA. Because there are often special teaching methods and techniques working with individuals with physical or mental disabilities, NITA can help individuals or groups find tennis programs in your area, or help establish new tennis programs for those with special needs. You can learn more, including groups offering adaptive tennis, by visiting our website.
Unlike many sports, tennis is a sport that can be learned as a child and enjoyed by every age group and ability through-out life. If you can hold a racquet, you can play tennis at some level! If you need a list of reasons why you should play tennis, here it is! Whether for health, fitness, social, competitive reasons, or just to have fun, give tennis a try! Through Northern Illinois Tennis Association, you can find information valuable for each tennis playing (or soon to be playing) member of your family.
